Tracking our thinking

We are learning that good readers don't just read the words on the page, but they also THINK a lot about what they are reading. During our 2 week introduction to Reader's workshop we are learning how to track the thinking we do during reading. Students use post it notes to leave them selves notes about what they have read. I've got some very good thinkers here in Powell's Paradise!

Rub a Dub Dub

 The reading tub is open for buisness. They probably fight to stay out of the tub at home but here in Powell's Paradise the tub is a sought after spot. Everyone is very excited about the new addition to reading spots.

 Meanwhile others found their own solitude to enjoy some quiet reading time. We are working on our stamina in reading. Today we made it 10 minutes of uninterupted silent reading.

Choices, choices, choices. Today we filled our book folders with "good fit" books to read during self selected reading time.

P.E....Finally

Everyone was very excited today to have gym for the first time this year. We need to remember to wear tennis shoes every Tuesday for gym so our class will lose all our marbles and earn extra P.E.

 Today we watched a video on BrainpopJr about place value and played a team game for the quizzes online.

Choosing avatars for ClassDojo

 We have chosen our avatars for Class Dojo and the students began earning points yesterday. This is really motivating the students to follow the procedures and expectations. The Class has already received 2 points from compliments in the hallway.

Corbin enjoyed getting to choose Play Doh on the first day.

 A newsletter came home in the orange folder today. There will not be a newsletter every Friday. I will try to get one our at the end of each month.

Back in ACPC!

Just a little Beatles humor to get us started this year. Now that I can finally post our first day news...on the second day. Other than some minor technology glitches the first day in Powell's Paradise lived up to its namesake. I am so proud of all the students on the exceptional job.

I have not gotten around to explaining the daily planners to the students so these have not been used and are not being sent home yet. We will start the planners Monday, next week. Please look for information to come home in the orange folders each night.
I have tried to share some photos I took on the iPad but once again technology is failing me, hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. Thanks for the great start!

Derby Day at ACPC

Okay Kentuckians, what is special about the first Saturday in May?
Students in Mrs. Powell's class will tell you, It's the Kentuck Derby!

We celebrated the greatest two minutes in sports with Derby style! Complete with Derby Pie, hats, a stick horse race and even our own version on mint juleps! Our horses may not have won but we definitely had the Derby Spirit!

Field Trip

We had tons of fun at the Moneyville exhibit in the Corvette Museum. The students were really good at going to the bank to get money and then spending it at the store. (Imagine that!) Putting money back into the bank was another story.

We learned a lot about Corvettes too, on our tour of the museum
