Scholastic Book Order

Tomorrow I will be sending home our first Scholastic Book order of the year!
All orders are due by September 24th . You may choose to place your order online by following the link below. Just enter  L88F2 when it asks you for the class code. Ordering online earns our class additional free books and gives you access to books that aren't in the flyer being sent home.

If you choose to order the traditional way by sending the flyer back to school please send correct change if using cash and be sure to make checks payable to ACPC with Scholastic Book Order in the for line.

Fall School Pictures

Fall pictures will be September 19th. Please try not to dress your child in green, as the photographer uses a green screen for background images. We will not have class pictures this day, only individual.

Friday Spelling Fun

Another good class performance on the spelling test Friday. The class average was a 97.5. Please remember that our spelling list follows our phonics skill for the week. The bonus words are able to be spelled by using the sounds in the words and applying the phonics skill. The bonus words were chest and clock, both having the short e or o sound.  This week's phonics skill is the CVCe pattern, remind your student that an e at the end of a word is silent but changes the other vowel sound to a long sound.
Friday's SPARKLE winner was Will
Jaxon was the runner up

What is Place Value?

I'm no Alex Trebec, but I am one mad Jeopardy host! :) Yesterday we reviewed before our Place Value test by playing Place Value Jeopardy.  Question after question the kids went head to head. Each group wagered points for the final Jeopardy question and Team 3 came out victorious.  I'm always "game" for some healthy competition. I am so proud of the class for handling the game so well.
Jeopardy Champs!

Sparkle!

SPARKLE is a fun way to review for our spelling test. The kids ask to play every day. We did an AWESOME job on our first test last week The words will get harder in a hurry so make sure your child doesn't get into the "This is easy so I don't have to try mindset."
Sparkle winner Mia

Class Dojo

I have introduced Class Dojo to the class. Class Dojo is an internet based behavior management system. While the website can be used to manage both negative and positive behaviors, I choose to use only the positive side of it. Students earn one point per day that they stay on green card. They can also earn points for hallway behavior (I choose one mystery walker each time we leave the room and award a point to that person if they display correct hallway behaviors). I also award students a point for turning in completed homework on time and for various other reasons (team work, helping others, etc.)

This is an example of what our classroom looks like on Class Dojo's website (again, it's an example, not our class):
Everyone chose their own avatar to represent them. They  started earning points last week and will have the opportunity to purchase a reward for every ten points they earn. The kids are very excited about earning their first rewards. Be sure to ask them often about their points!

So what does all of that good behavior buy them!? See the complete list of rewards below!

Give with Target

Want to help our kids? It’s easy. Our school can receive up to $10,000 in Target GiftCards® for books or any supplies we need. Wouldn’t that be great? All we need to do is vote for our school each week until September 8. It’s part of Give With Target®. For every 25 votes our school receives, Target will send a $25 gift card. Find out more and vote at Facebook.com/Target.

First week of Homework

We are starting our weekly homework routine this week. Homework is due on Friday. If you need to combine some of the days' work to fit your schedule that is fine. Please do not however, complete all of the homework on one day. This will help your child on the spelling test on Friday. We do not give the bonus words to study because these words will follow the phonics skill and the students will need to use the skill to sound out the bonus words. Bonus words do not count against the score, each word will add 5 points.
All homework is due on Friday even if your child is absent during the week. If your child is absent on Monday arrangements can be made to pick it up in the office after 1:30. If your child is absent on Friday, the homework should be brought the next day we are at school.

Any work that is stamped with a Homework stamp should be returned the next day.
Homework is work that will help your child with the skills we are studying, please have your child complete the homework independently first and PLEASE look over their answers and go over the correct ones with them. Thank you for all you help!

First Day of School 2012

Congratulations on a great first day back at school. Today Nate, Hunter and Jessica shared 10 important things about themselves. We have spent a lot of time today trying to organize our supplies. The rest of this week will be focused on organization and procedures. I have started the Facebook group. The group is set to private and you must first join the group to see the posts. The group is called "Mrs. Powell second grade ACPC" search under this name and click join group. I hope that this blog and the Facebook group will help keep you well inform about what is happening in our class.
