Story Elements

S=setting  T=Talking Characters  O=oops! there's a problem  R=Resolution  Y=Yes! the problem's solved.
STORY helps us remember the elements of a story.
Working in pairs or by themselves, everyone read
Anansi and the Talking Melon and mapped out the
story elements.
The students enjoyed reading
Hooway for Wodney Wat
to learn about story elements.
Wodney becomes an unlikely hero to solve the class' problem in this delightful story.

Working with a partner makes work fun!
Some students choose to get comfortable
and work on their own.
We like this story!

Happy Birthday!

Mrs. Devillez visited our classroom today to teach a lesson on self control. She will visit our class once each month. The kids are always excited when Mrs. Devillez comes.

The students all made a "self control remote" to help remind us ways we can control our actions .
Hunter works on his self control remote

Jasmine makes a "walking" button for her remote

First Inductee into 10 point AR club

Congratulations to Jaxon for being the first student in the class to earn 10 AR points.
Jaxon has assured me that I will walk in a 100 point parade this year!

Friday SPARKLE!

The competition is really heating up in this room with SPARKLE! I'm having to find some pretty hard words for the end of the game. Keep up the good work! Here are the winners lately.
Winner: Hunter
Runner up: Jasmine

Mia-Winner!
Will-Runner-up

Keep Studying
those spelling Words!

It "pays" to be good

The students are racking up those Class Dojo. Many students have already traded their first 10 points. This is a real motivation for the kids and I am very pleased with how hard they are working to earn points.
Working hard with our shoes kicked off! This is our most popular prize.
So far we have earned points for turning our homework finished and on time(without being asked for it), following hallway procedures, missing zero on morning work and not pulling a card all day. Keep up the good work!
Learning is even more fun when you get to sit at the teacher's desk!

PTO Membership Drive and PIZZA!

Please take the time to join our school PTO. The Membership drive information was sent home with your child. Anyone can join; your family, your church, your dog...well maybe not the dog but it was worth a shot. the classroom with the most members will win a PIZZA PARTY! So go out there and bring in those members. Just tell them Mrs. Powell's favorite food is pizza.

We've been busy!

I can't count the number of times I have opened the blog to write a post, only to be pulled away from the blank screen by a torn book page or a paper cut crisis. This is not including the two times I clicked wrong and deleted everything I had done. Arrrrgh! Never a dull moment, that's for sure. Nevertheless, we have been busy this week and the students have really helped me with remembering things when the craziness seemed to get the better of me. I would like to apologize for last week's spelling test. It has been graded since Tuesday, and...they have never made it off my desk. They will go home today and hopefully today's test will be with it.

Tasting Grapefruit
Last week we read Poppleton and the Grapefruit from our reading book. This is a funny story about a pig who desperately wants to like grapefruit because he heard on TV that it would make him live longer. The only problem...Poppleton HATES grapefruit. It has been my experience that a lot of the students have never tasted grapefruit when we read this story. So, on Tuesday we did just that. we looked at, smelled, and touched our grapefruit in order to write good descriptions of them. Finally we took a bite! Wow! The kids had some really good ways to describe the way it tastes! Below you can view a video of our experience.

Math Masters!
We continue our study of numbers up to 1000. This past week we have worked on expanded form. We will have a test over Unit 2 that includes expanded form on Monday!
hard at work making numbers in expanded form
working with partners to help each other

our cool way to help us understand expanded form and check our work!
